San Pedro is a densely urban neighborhood in the city of Los Angeles, in Los Angeles County, California. The name San Pedro is derived from and in honor of St. Peter of Alexandria. It is a lively neighborhood full of bustle and color, despite the influence of the ocean and that laid-back California beach atmosphere. A portion of the Port of Los Angeles lies within the neighborhood of San Pedro and San Pedro is the final home of the U.S.S. Iowa, a beloved memorial and museum ship, as well as the wonderful San Pedro farmers market. The first known inhabitants of the area were the native Tongva or Gabrieleno tribes who were known for their mastery of ocean-going canoes. The first European explorer to come to the area was Juan Cabrillo from Portugal who arrived in 1542. The Spanish soon came to use the bay and peninsula. Settlement of the area that would one day be San Pedro began in 1769. In 1784, the land was part of the Rancho San Pedro land grant. Next, in 1848, the area came under U.S. control when Mexico relinquished control. Then, in 1888, a tract of land alongside the bay was acquired by the War Department and overtime it was developed into Fort MacArthur. San Pedro remained an independent community until its consolidation with Los Angeles in 1909.

The neighborhood of San Pedro spans approximately 10.372 square miles. The approximate population is 87,238 and the approximate population density is 8,411 people per square mile. LAUSD is the second largest school district in the nation, has a student body of more than 600,000 and encompasses more than 900 schools.
