The city began as a master-planned community, one of the earliest in the United States. The subdivision was laid out by Fredrick Law Olmsted, Jr. The Palos Verdes Estates subdivision was established beginning in 1923. It began with 3,200 acres held by Frank Vanderlip who established a land syndicate holding for Palos Verdes Peninsula and a real estate development trust for the subdivision. The community was incorporated in December of 1939. The designers used deed restrictions to control the development of the subdivision even after the arrival of residents. Today it is a thriving community with a long history, which it works to preserve in the form of historic buildings and old school charms.
